Detail overview
Yellow Dal Tadka
A beloved North Indian comfort dish, Yellow Dal Tadka is a flavorful, aromatic lentil preparation that transforms humble yellow lentils — typically toor dal or moong dal — into a hearty, satisfying meal. The dal is cooked until soft and creamy with turmeric and a pinch of salt, then finished with the signature tadka (tempering) that gives the dish its bold character.
In the tadka, ghee or oil is heated and infused with cumin seeds, mustard seeds, dried red chilies, and aromatic garlic and ginger, which are sautéed until golden and fragrant. Chopped onions and tomatoes are added and cooked down with spices like coriander powder, red chili powder, and garam masala, creating a rich, flavorful topping. This sizzling tempering is poured over the hot dal just before serving, infusing it with layers of smoky, earthy, and slightly spicy flavor.
Garnished with fresh coriander and sometimes a squeeze of lemon for brightness, Yellow Dal Tadka is best enjoyed piping hot with steamed rice, jeera rice, or fluffy rotis — a comforting, nourishing dish that’s simple yet deeply satisfying.
