Chicken Sadheko
Zesty, spicy, and full of rustic Nepali flavor, Chicken Sadheko is a beloved traditional dish served as a warm or cold appetizer or snack, especially popular with drinks or as a light side dish. The word Sadheko means “marinated” — and in this dish, tender chicken is tossed with fresh spices, herbs, and tangy seasonings for an explosion of taste in every bite.
Boneless chicken pieces are usually boiled or roasted until cooked and then shredded or chopped into bite-sized chunks. The chicken is then mixed with finely sliced onions, chopped tomatoes, fresh green chilies, and plenty of fresh coriander.
A splash of mustard oil or toasted sesame oil infuses the dish with a deep, earthy aroma, while a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice adds the essential tang. Ground spices like turmeric, chili powder, cumin, and sometimes Sichuan pepper (timur) bring warmth and a hint of heat.
Finely chopped ginger and garlic may be added for an extra layer of punchy flavor. The chicken and spices are gently tossed together and left to rest briefly so the flavors meld beautifully.
Served at room temperature or slightly warm, Chicken Sadheko is juicy, spicy, tangy, and refreshing — a true taste of Nepali local kitchens, perfect for gatherings, snacks, or simply enjoying with a chilled drink.
