Jeera Rice
A fragrant and flavorful twist on plain steamed rice, Jeera Rice is a popular North Indian side dish known for its subtle, comforting aroma of cumin seeds (jeera). Made with long-grain basmati rice, this dish is light, fluffy, and delicately spiced, making it a perfect companion for rich curries, dals, and gravies.
To prepare Jeera Rice, whole cumin seeds are gently toasted in hot ghee or oil until they crackle and release their warm, nutty fragrance. The washed rice is then sautéed with the cumin and cooked with just the right amount of water or stock until each grain is perfectly separate and infused with the mellow, earthy flavor of cumin. Sometimes a few whole spices like bay leaf, cloves, or a cinnamon stick are added for an extra aromatic touch.
Finished with a sprinkle of fresh coriander, Jeera Rice is served hot and pairs beautifully with dishes like Dal Tadka, Butter Chicken, Paneer Butter Masala, or any spiced curry. Simple yet flavorful, it’s a timeless favorite that elevates any meal with minimal effort.
